Will work for carrots! Calvin loves those orange, little things and will expect to get paid in carrots after riding, but really, any kind of treat will do! He is a Haflinger gelding owned by volunteer Sue Holland, and his sturdy frame, smooth gaits and calm demeanor make him a terrific therapeutic horse for children and adults.

Chief is a big horse with a big heart. He has a lot of spirit and gets up and go, but is a very honest and willing horse. He works well in both English and Western disciplines and is a master on the trails. He is trying to find his "special" place in our program, and is learning to take things more slowly for the less hearty riders. In spite of all the fun and silliness going on at the barn and the pretty mares sourrounding him, Chief remains steadfast and serious, a real horse's horse...he's all about getting the job done first -- carrots and kissing later...and, in that order puuulllleeeease!. He is owned by Debra McConville. 

Darby is a 10-year-old gelding, imported from Connemara, Ireland. He can jump, do dressage and loves trail rides. He is a favorite among riders because of his calmness, his willingness to please and his gentle spirit.

This is the Momma of all Mommas! Just look at that beautiful face, never mind the grey hair, she's not old - she's mature, thank you very much! Diamond Jiggers Bar is our 25-year-old Palamino mare. She still has a lot of go, and is a darling for all of our young riders. Her nick name is "Jiggy Momma".

Kidlet is a gentle senior at Special Spirit: the Horse father if you will. He is a 30-year-old Arabian gelding, known for his love of bananas - even the peel will do! He is always calm, safe and quiet, and enjoys being a therapeutic horse. Because of his smooth, long fur, some people claim he is a bunny in disguise!

Murphy, the mightiest of them all! He might be small, but don't count him out because of his size! He can jump, do dressage and has shown in many horseshows. Murphy is 17 years old and he is a Welch Cobb Quarter Pony - wow that was a mouthful....He likes his chow just like Calvin - keep those carrots coming!!!  Murphy is owned by Anne and Sam Wang.

Pumpkin is the newest addition to Special Spirit, he immediately felt at home when he arrived in the summer of 2010. Pumpkin is a former "pony-horse" from the racetrack. He loves having children and adults on his back.

Reggie is another one of our seniors, a 30 year old Thoroughbred gelding and still going strong. He was a racehorse back in the day, and lived a hard life for many years until his owner Sara found him. He spent a few years as a riding and trail horse, but now is a Special Spirit therapy horse. He loves to spend easy days walking around the ranch with his favorite student and good friend Andy.
