ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
Who is Barney McGeary?
Most people who have participated in the Kiwanis Competion for Special Athletes (KECSA) over the years would have seen Barney McGeary judging the trail courses. Sadly, he passed away February 2009 and will be greatly missed! For many years Barney enjoyed volunteering for the Tri-Valley Special Olympics Equestrian Center in Chatsworth. He found great happiness in witnessing riders of all ages and levels find the joy of riding a horse as he had.
What is The Barney McGeary Scholarship?
A portion of monies collected from Special Spirit's Annual Barn Party & Fundraiser will be applied to The Barney McGeary Scholarship Fund and an amount will be awarded yearly to a participating rider of the Kiwanis Equestrian Competition for Special Athletes (KECSA). The awarded money must then be used for continued participation in an Equine-Assisted Therapy Program.

Who is eligible?
Riders from Therapeutic Riding Programs and individuals who are interested may apply. Head Coaches or Program Directors may also nominate an eligible rider from their program participating in the annual Kiwanis Equestrian Competition for Special Athletes (KECSA).
How do I apply?
The participating rider/guardian will complete the application. Rider, coach, program director or guardian will write a short essay on why horseback riding is important to the candidate. The application, essay, and a picture/movie is submitted to Special Spirit Inc. before deadline. The winner is chosen by a panel appointed by Kiwanis and is announced at the Kiwanis Equestrian Competition for Special Athletes (KECSA) at Hansen Dam in September.
