Special Spirit is a PATH International Certified Therapeutic Riding Center, with PATH Certified Trainers. We emphasizes recreation, riding skills and FUN on horseback. Our goal is to help children and adults with disabilities face their challenges, form lasting social skills and develop a sense of belonging and purpose in the community.
THERAPEUTIC RIDING LESSON:
Lessons will include grooming and tacking before and after the ride, with about 25-35 minutes of actual ride time. When possible and applicable, we will try to match riders into a group lesson. We believe that riding sessions are more fun, engaging and educational when there is more than one participant in the arena.
BENEFITS OF THERAPEUTIC RIDING:
Strengthens muscles, improves overall circulation and coordination.
Riders achieve a sense of well being and confidence from interacting with the horses and mastering skills.
Interactive games and exercises help riders develop sequencing, patterning and motor planning skills. Increased hand-eye coordination and improved visual-spacial perception are also natural benefits.
Responsibility, leadership, education, companionship, compassion and communication are but a few of the benefits. Fur thermore, we work to create a community environment that puts both youths with disabilities as well as their friends and fam ily, in riding situations together. Riders of all ages and abilities are welcome. Assessment determines participation level.
The minimum age for therapeutic riding is 3 years old.
There is no maximum age to participate in our programs. For the well being of our horses there is a weight limit of 185 lbs. This is subject to change.
We accept riders with all disabilities, providing that PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) does not list the disability as a contraindication to riding, and a doctor signs a release indicating that, in his or her opinion, riding would be acceptable for this person.
All riders will be provided an ASTM-SEI approved helmet. Riders are recommended to wear long pants and must wear closed toe shoes or boots.
Riders will use standard English or Western tack.
Lessons are 45 minutes, which includes horsemanship prior-to and after the ride.
Each rider, pending need, will be provided one teacher, a side-walker and/or lead line.
Please be sure to arrive 5 minutes BEFORE your session start time.
CANCELLATION POLICY: Cancellation notice must be made 24 hours prior to scheduled lesson in order to receive full credit of lesson fee. We do not offer cash refunds.
